Herald Sports Writer I In a few weeks Morgan Reeser will begin a six-month stint as an engineering officer in the United States Merchant Marine perhaps aboard a world-roaming freighter or maybe a 900-foot tanker For the moment though the Miami native was content with a 24-footer as he led the pack Thursday after three races in the 1985 J-24 Midwinter Championships with a final race or two to go today Reeser a recent US Merchant Marine Academy graduate and a four-time Collegiate All-American sailor posted finishes of fourth and 14th in second round in the championship fleet to move from third place to first Added to a third in opening race it was enough to give him 21 points and a four-point lead over A1 Constants of Oakland NJ who had 25 points on finishes of 20-1-4 Ken Olsen of Dennis Mass and Chuck Millican of Annapolis Md were tied for third at 29 and WP Hunt Jr of Hampton Va was fifth with 30 points The 100 yachts that are sailing in the event were split into two divisions after three qualifying races Tuesday a championship fleet of the top 50 finishers and a designers fleet of the bottom 50 Jeff Scherpf of Havre de Grace Md was the designer fleet leader after three races with 11 points and finishes of 2-5-4 The two races Thursday were a repeat of race with the boats playing the shifts in light fluky northerlies Race Chairman Skip Ryder of the host Coral Reef Yacht Club had scheduled one race for this morning If that race is finished in time for a second race to be started before a 12:30 pm deadline then Ryder will re-sail a race that was abandoned Wednesday when no boat reached the first weather mark within a prescribed one-hour time limit Consistency has been the key for the leaders all of whom had two finishes in the top 10 and a third in the top 20 Glenn Darden a former world Lightning class champion who led after the first race slipped to seventh overall Thursday on finishes of 1 1 and 28 and local favorite Augie Diaz second after the
